The Copernicus Marine Environment Monitoring Service (CMEMS) benefits from a range of in situ observations, drawn from a wide variety of platforms, including autonomous ocean-based observatories and sensors aboard ships. Almost 9000 platforms supply the service with data, which is critical for the production of the Copernicus Marine Service products. The Copernicus Marine Service has from the very beginning realized the value of in situ observations in the production line, making the Copernicus Marine Service In Situ Thematic Assembly Centre (INSTAC) an integral part of the service provision. INSTAC builds on a range of in situ data providers, including, predominantly, the EuroGOOS Regional Operational Oceanographic Systems (ROOS) and the Joint WMO-IOC Commission for Oceanography and Marine Meteorology (JCOMM). INSTAC also works closely with SeaDataNet, coordinating a network of European National Data Centres, and EMODnet, unlocking European in situ marine data for the majority of data parameters.
